Defining Mental Health:

Understanding Key Concepts

What does “medically stable” mean?

A person is considered medically stable when they do not have a life-threatening medical condition and do not require emergency medical treatment.

Examples of situations that are not medically stable and should go directly to an ER include:

  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing, or seizures

  • Serious injury or uncontrolled bleeding

  • Overdose or suspected poisoning

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Severe withdrawal symptoms that may require medical monitoring
