TIPS FOR STAYING IN RECOVERY DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

The holiday season is challenging for those recovering from substance/alcohol abuse. Twenty-two million Americans are currently in recovery. Consider some of these tips by planning ahead and being prepared to deal with temptations during the holidays.

  1. Make an exit plan for a party ahead of time to be prepared to leave if you feel the urge to break recovery or become uncomfortable.
  2. Maintain your recovery routine during the holidays, including activities like exercise, meditation and leaning on peer recovery support groups.

  3. Monitor your feelings and be prepared to say NO to drugs or alcohol.

  4. Bring a non-alcoholic beverage with you to a party or family gathering to avoid being offered an alcoholic beverage and set boundaries.

  5. Bring a sober buddy with you to a party or gathering to provide additional support.

  6. Add sober activities to parties, such as games.

Family members should also make a plan to prepare for changes they might see in a friend or family member going through recovery. Behavioral differences, anxiety and stress are to be expected.

Sometimes the stress of the holidays can be too much to handle alone, and you might need some added support.
