SBIRT
Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic use, abuse, and dependence on alcohol and illicit drugs. The SBIRT model was developed by an Institute of Medicine recommendation that called for community-based screening for health risk behaviors, including substance us e. The goal of SBIRT is not to identify alcohol- or other drug-dependent individuals. SBIRT is intended to meet the public health goal of reducing the harms and societal costs associated with risky use.
In partnership with community medical providers, Hegira Health, Inc. offers SBIRT services in a variety of healthcare settings in Western Wayne County. Our SBIRT teams work directly with medical practitioners to promote optimal wellness. Services include substance use assessment, patient education, brief treatment, action planning, interaction with peer recovery coaches, referral to external resources and long-term intervention and follow-up services and supports.
